DAMN, MY JOB IS SWEET.

REEEALLY SWEET. Thursday, the end of my second day of work. I arrived a little early because no one in the office actually knows what time I should start, and so someone thought they were funny and made up a time. Haha. Does not matter so much, though, because the pay is decent, and all I have done so far is observations. I work on the stock trading floor of a brokerage company, and yesterday I learned the difference between a listed exchange and a market, in which stocks are traded over the counter, as opposed to the auctionary exchange. Today, I learned where they keep the stocked refrigerator, and the vending machine that gives out free sodas. I decided that to I would drink back the money I lose on my paycheck for taxes, and was trying to calculate how many free sodas I would need to drink hourly, as well as the problem of how to get that many sodas back to my desk without arousing suspicion. I was disappointed, though, when I checked the payroll schedule and realized that I would be paid never.
Because I still have not received work, I sat myself in a fairly comfy rolly chair, and rolled wherever the geography of the floor felt like taking me. The chair and I eventually ended up with the two guys in the back row, who you can't really see, but know are working hard when the stock market gets busy, because you hear a constant stream of
"SHIT!"
"FUCK!"
"SHIT!"
"SHIT!"
all the way in the front row. I noticed one of the guys, Birchie, has the habit of chewing the hell out of a pen while he works, and has a pen cup loaded with half-devoured pens. So I say to him, "Christ, you ravage your pens." To which he repiles, "Yeah, well, better than dick." Makes sense. His logic was too strong to argue with, so I silently basked in his very loud, very obscene, yet efficient work methods. I was also invited to join the company soccer team.
I guess as soon as I learn the first thing about the stock market and their role, I will be getting work. My friend says it sounds like me doing nothing and getting paid for it, but I think it's more me looking incompetent, and getting paid for it. Sure, the internships are meant for NYU business grad school students, but what the hell. I guess they figure I am capable enough to get the job done. Or else someone lied to them. Either way I get paid, but I'm going to keep on studying everything very close, nonetheless. Two good days so far, I was given my Employee ID, my desk and workstation are still being decided and set up, and then I will behold the power of a complete and fully functional workstation.
At least untill Monday, work will be more observing the traders, getting familiar with people and programs, and learning about the market. Probably Monday I will be getting real projects and assignments to work on. A few good things so far, nothing really bad, a lot more to come.
