3 U.S. relief workers shot to death in Iraq
Attack is second on civilians in past week
Monday, March 15, 2004 Posted: 11:16 PM EST (0416 GMT)

BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) -- Three U.S. civilians in Iraq to deliver relief
supplies were killed in a drive-by shooting Monday and two others
wounded, coalition military officials said.

The shootings in Mosul, northern Iraq, followed a spate of bombings
during the weekend that killed six U.S. troops.

Killed Monday were Larry T. Elliott, 60, and Jean Dover Elliott, 58, of
Cary, North Carolina; and Karen Denise Watson, 38, of Bakersfield,
California, according to the Southern Baptist International Mission
Board. (Full story)

The attackers opened fire with AK-47 assault weapons on the victims'
civilian vehicle, witnesses said.

An Iraqi police officer found the bullet-riddled car shortly after the
shooting, which occurred at 5 p.m. (9 a.m. ET).

The officer took the two wounded to an Iraqi hospital, and they have
since been moved to a U.S. Army field hospital in Mosul, according to
the military.

One of the wounded was undergoing surgery, and the second was in
intensive care.

"We do not know what the five U.S. citizens were doing at the time of
the attack, but we do know they were in the Mosul area to deliver
relief supplies," the military said in its statement.

Christian missionaries killed in Iraq

Tuesday 16 March 2004, 9:22 Makka Time, 6:22 GMT

A shooting has left three American missionaries dead and two wounded in
the northern Iraqi city of Mosul.

The victims in Monday's attack were Baptist missionaries of the
Virginia-based Southern Baptist International Mission Board. Hospital
officials said two of the dead were women.

A spokesman for US occupation forces in Mosul said the missionaries,
workers for a volunteer group, were travelling in one car when they
came under attack.

An off-duty Iraqi policeman found the car shortly after the shooting and
took the wounded to an Iraqi hospital.

US Army air medical evacuation helicopters later transported them to a
combat support hospital in Mosul.

One had surgery and the other was kept in an intensive care unit.

Iraqi police and the FBI were involved in the investigation. The victims
were attacked by two or three men in a car, said witnesses.

The presence of missionaries in majority-Muslim countries is highly
resented by locals as another element of foreign interference. About
100 are reported to have entered Iraq since Baghdad fell last April.

The International Bible Society has distributed 10,000 books in Arabic,
entitled "Christ has brought peace".
